The Energy Portfolio Committee annual report for the period July 2025 to June 2026 will be presented to Council.
The Energy Portfolio Committee is a committee of Council. It was established under section 79 of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act. Its oversight role includes developing strategy for monitoring the City's energy requirements. The committee makes recommendations to Council. The annual report is the formal account of that oversight work for July 2025 to June 2026. Council then notes it. It is one of the ways the public can see how the City is overseeing its energy functions.
The committee was created in December 2021 and has since been through several changes. Its current chairperson is Zimkhitha Sulelo, and there is no deputy chairperson at present. Membership has also changed. For example, one councillor's listed service on the committee ended in January 2026. The City publishes the committee's agendas, reports and minutes on its council meeting calendar pages, where residents can read them.
Energy is a priority for Cape Town. The Mayoral Committee member for Energy has been tasked with working to end load-shedding in Cape Town over time. The City has pursued this through measures such as buying power from independent producers and reducing its dependence on Eskom. Typical topics for the committee include electricity supply and tariffs, renewable energy procurement, grid resilience and the energy budget. The City's capital budget inputs for energy are one example. I could not retrieve current figures or recent developments for 2025/26. Residents should check the committee agenda and annual report on the City of Cape Town website for those details.
