The Council will consider the transfer of consolidated portions of Erf 32403 Cape Town, Remainder Erf 2197 Pinelands and Remainder Erf 112629 Cape Town, situated at 5A, 10 and 12 Viking Road, Thornton, zoned General Industry 1, via auction number 025/2025/2026.
The three erven at 5A, 10 and 12 Viking Road, Thornton are City-owned land in the Epping Industria 2 area. A planning application (Case ID 1500004582) proposed rezoning, subdividing and consolidating Erven 32403, 2197-RE and 112629-RE Cape Town, covering about 4.3 ha. The components together produce a single erf zoned General Industry (GI1). That leaves a large undeveloped City-owned property next to the Epping industrial area. The application document also refers to a need for a truck stop and associated facilities in this industrial area. The document dates from about 2023, so the current plans for the site may differ.
The land sits in a well-placed industrial node. Thornton lies between the N1 and N2, joined by the M7 (Jakes Gerwel Drive), with immediate access to the M17 (Jan Smuts Drive). That location is likely to make the site attractive to logistics and industrial buyers.
The sale is part of a wider City programme. The City says its auctions are part of a strategy to release well-located, unused City-owned properties that are not required for municipal purposes. It says proceeds are reinvested in municipal infrastructure and service delivery. Council approval of the transfer matters because it commits public land to private ownership, and the sale proceeds feed into City funding. The same approval step applies to other City property auctions, such as the 29 May 2025 sale of 13 sites.
